If I have a family law attorney already, why do I need a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA ®)? Family law attorneys are essential for providing legal information and preparing and filing divorce paperwork. However, 90% of that preparation is financial in nature. Hiring a family law financial analyst to review the effects of a given legal strategy on retirement spending, as an example, will lead you to smarter settlement choices at a more affordable cost.
What can I expect from hiring a CDFA ®? You can expect complete confidentiality and professionalism. You can expect a deep dive into your finances to create schedules of assets/liabilities and income/expenses needed to make sound decisions before coming to the negotiating table. You will also receive skilled financial analysis on settlement offers during the process. Ninety days after your divorce, we provide a "New Normal" coaching session to assist in completing items such as renaming accounts, changing title records and setting up a trust, if needed.
Can't my financial planner or tax CPA do these financial schedules for me? Just as you need a specialized divorce attorney, you need a specialized financial professional. Most financial planners and tax CPAs do not have the expertise or in-depth experience to know the ins-and-outs of divorce and the strategy needed to put you in the strongest negotiating position. You need hard numbers to support your asset division and any marital or child support going forward. Without the guidance of a Divorce Financial Advocate, you could be spending more time and money negotiating with your former spouse.
