Defining Divorce Differently
Let's face it, going through divorce IS emotional. It is often gut-wrenching and soul-crushing. But it can also be a time to begin anew and chart your new path. It is important you define what a successful divorce looks like for you. DIVEE is here to help with that process and help achieve your vision. We believe strongly that understanding your finances is a critical part of moving forward.
Right now, "we" are a firm of one. Obviously, I am not your sister, your mom or your BFF. What I am is a financial professional acting as an independent, third-party analyst for you during your divorce. Yes, you need a divorce attorney. But, just as importantly, you need a financial advocate during your one shot at asset division and marital support negotiations. Someone who can answer your financial questions, uncover financial inconsistencies, provide creative ideas about all assets (including jointly held real estate), translate retirement plan and QDRO language and, ultimately, create a financial lifestyle plan you can live with post-divorce.
A marriage of thirty-one years, three amazing children, a home filled with a lifetime of memories, a spectacular vacation property, real estate investments and more. In other words, a very charmed life and, POOF, it all blew up on a cold day in March, 2020.
No, this didn't happen to me, but it happened to my sister, which made it almost worse. In the beginning, I thought there was nothing I could do. Giving her a shoulder to cry on and a sympathetic ear, morning, noon, and in the middle of the night, felt incredibly inadequate. I became so angry thinking about how one human being could wreak such havoc on another. It rocked not only her world, but the lives of her children; my niece and nephews.
But then I realized I could do more than provide her with a shoulder to cry on. I began applying my background as a CPA, CFO, and real estate finance professional to help with her divorce settlement. I dug into her finances to negotiate a more favorable Marital Support Agreement (MSA). I created realistic retirement projections and a manageable monthly budget to put her in the strongest financial footing possible post-divorce.
She, however, had not been the first. I realized I had been doing this for good friends over cups of coffee, excel spreadsheets and Quicken downloads at various kitchen tables over the years. I asked myself, how many more people are embarking on a divorce without the financial acumen needed to understand what they have, what they need and what they deserve? I launched DIVEE to help people take financial control of their divorce and plan a secure future.
